Finding Carrigeen

Carrigeen, Ballyferriter, Dingle, Co Kerry

How to get to the house:

View from the drive

From Kerry International Airport

Leave the airport by turning left, after you leave the car park, onto the main road. Drive to the junction at the end and turn left again.  After about 500m take the right turn between the petrol station and the Centra shop along the R561, towards Castlemaine.

As you approach Castlemaine turn right to go into the village, sign-posted Dingle. Drive across the bridge over the river, and then turn left, towards Dingle on the R561. You should see The Castle pub straight in front of you as you turn left.
You stay on this road until you reach the junction with the N86 past Inch.
However, you might want to consider stopping at Inch beach which is amazing. http://www.inchbeach.com/index.php. Inch is about 18km (11 miles) from Castlemaine.

After you leave Inch you will drive along the Wild Atlantic Way for a little while until you come to a junction (about 8km/5 miles)to join the N86. Turn left and head towards Dingle.

Upon arriving in Dingle (18km), go straight across the first roundabout and turn left at the second roundabout.

See signpost picture here - note we don't know these two people who happen to be walking, quietly about their business when we whizzed by and I was leaning out of the car taking photographs.

At this point you'll see that Ballyferriter is now displayed by its Irish spelling of Baile an Fheirtearaigh

After taking the left turn at the roundabout the road bends slighty with SuperValu supermarket on your right. This is the last stop for wine before you get to our house - just saying. Being a supermarket they also stock most items.
Continue on that road for abut 50m and you come to a fork, keep going to the left, following signs for Baile an Fheirtearaigh. See picture to left. The road runs alongside the harbour and bay on your left and a variety of shops and pubs in multi-coloured painted buildings on the right.

Continue through the town, past the harbour, past the aquarium, on the right) and along the bay until you reach a roundabout. (1km) and take the left turn.

See picture to left.

Again follow the signs for Bail an Fheirtearaigh on the R559 which means you'll be crossing the narrow and past the Dingle Distillery. We do say past here but of course you can stop. It's produces Gin, Vodka and now Whiskey!

At this stage, you have two choices to get to Ballyferriter.

Choice one

Turn right in about 100m after the Distillery and drive round the back of the headland to Ballyferriter, it takes about 15 minutes.
Watch out for this sign post - pictured left. Our instructions are to follow the R559 and as you'll appreciate this sign post is saying the R559 goes in both direction. This is not the only time you'll encounter this, the road is essentially a circular road.

You are to take the right turn signed posted B. an Fheirtearaigh.
If it is your aim to go this route and you reach a petrol station on the left, you have gone too far.

Having turned right, drive along the R559 for about 4 or 5 minutes, around a wiggle of bends and up a hill, there is one right hand bend that is really quite sharp.

As you reach the top of the hill there is a left turn, sign posted Ballyferriter in Irish (Baile an Fheirtéaraigh) and a brown tourist sign to Wine Strand, take it. See picture left.

The road veers to the left, stay on it and come down the hill.

It is possible to stop at this point, turn immediately into the parking bay that's on your left as you take the junction.

At this stage, you are overlooking Ballyferriter and the bay. Unless you are driving at night when you'll see lights or in bad weather when you'll see... well rain and clouds.

Drive down the hill, and keep straight until you reach the village about 6km.

Drive through the village, past the Ceann Sibeal Hotel, past the school on the left and the community centre on the right, modern complex with sloping green roofs.

You will see An Speice B&B on the left and then the Black Cat shop.

Indicate left. Turn into the lane end and entrance to the drive is on your right.

There is a Sherry Fitzgerald for sale sign & our gate/entrance is just to the left of that sign.  You should see the gate into the drive and a black golf with UK plates.

Welcome to Carrigeen

Choice two

Instead of taking the right turn at this junction signed posted Baile an Fheirtearaigh, go straight ahead towards Ceann Tra or Ventry in English.

Continue straight along the road, around Slea Head Drive and experience more of the Wild Atlantic Way.

This route will take about 30 minutes, without stopping, although you will want to stop.

As you arrive into Ballyferriter you will see a left turn towards the golf course. Carrigeen (the house) is about 500m on the right, on the corner of a lane.

From Dublin

If you are travelling to Kerry for the first time we recommend you drive towards Dingle along the bottom of the peninsula and leave Dingle along the top, over the Connor Pass.
To take this route having come down the motorway and through Adare you will arrive into Abbeyfeale. Keep on the N21, passing by Knocknagsel to a roundabout with the N21 and N23 and a turn off to Castleisland.
Take the N23 sign posted towards Farrenfore. About 10 minutes into the journey you will pass Kerry Airport on your left, continue past to the end of that road & turn left.

From here follow the directions above.
